NTH2 carbide square insert – applications and construction
double-sided 90° square with a hole, without a chip breaker
The SNMA 190616 turning insert is a double-sided, square indexable insert made of grade NTH2 cemented carbide, designed primarily for turning cast iron. The S shape, a square with a 90° corner angle, provides a short, rigid cutting edge that withstands roughing loads well. Negative geometry with a 0° clearance angle allows both sides of the insert to be used — a total of eight cutting corners. The large rε 1.6 mm nose radius strengthens the tip and supports machining at greater depths of cut and higher feeds. Type A denotes a flat rake face with a mounting hole and no molded chip breaker.
Key features of the NTH2 carbide insert
- Eight cutting edges — 4 corners on each of the two sides reduce the cost per cutting edge compared with single-sided inserts.
- Grade NTH2 for ISO groups K and M — carbide designed for cast iron (K10-K25) and stainless and austenitic steels (M10-M25).
- Corner radius rε 1.6 mm — reinforced tip for medium machining and roughing at higher feeds.
- The 90° square provides a short, rigid edge with good strength in interrupted cutting.
- Dimensions according to ISO 1832: side length 19.05 mm, IC 19.05 mm (3/4″), thickness 6.35 mm — for holders with a square pocket.
- Type A with a flat rake face performs well in short-chipping materials where a chip breaker is not required.
Square insert applications and cutting data selection
The SNMA 190616 insert (also written without a space as snma190616) performs well in turning housings, bushings, and pulleys made of gray and malleable cast iron, as well as alloy steel and austenitic steel components that produce controlled chips. Grade NTH2 covers ISO groups K10-K25 for cast iron and M10-M25 for stainless steel, allowing one insert type to handle a mixed range of workpieces. Calculate spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D): when turning a cast iron shaft with a diameter of 80 mm at a cutting speed of Vc = 120 m/min, the result is approximately 478 rpm. SNMA 190616 indexable inserts are supplied by the manufacturer Baildonit; they are sometimes selected as replacements for triangular TNMG inserts where a more rigid edge is needed.
Tolerance class M ensures repeatable corner positioning after rotating the insert in its pocket, reducing setup time when replacing a worn edge. Type A without a chip breaker works best with brittle materials that break chips naturally — primarily cast iron. For steels that produce long, ductile chips, chip flow must be controlled through cutting parameters or a separate mechanical chip breaker. The central hole allows rigid lever or screw clamping, which reduces vibration under high roughing forces and protects the edge against chipping.
Type A has no molded chip breaker — materials that produce long, ductile chips (ductile structural steels) require separate chip flow control or an insert version with a chip breaker. It delivers the best results in cast iron and brittle materials.

Frequently asked questions about the SNMA 190616 insert
number of edges, materials, and insert construction
Eight — a square has 4 corners per side, while negative geometry (0° clearance angle) allows both sides of the insert to be used. Once a corner is worn, simply rotate the insert in its pocket without changing the holder.
Primarily for gray and malleable cast iron (ISO group K10-K25) and stainless and austenitic steels (M10-M25). The grade withstands medium machining and roughing of brittle, short-chipping materials well.
This is a relatively large radius that strengthens the tip and allows higher feeds and greater depths of cut — a typical choice for roughing. Within the square insert family, smaller radii are used for lighter, more precise turning.
No — type A has a flat rake face with a hole and no molded chip breaker. It therefore performs best in cast iron and brittle materials that break chips naturally; for long chips, control chip flow through cutting parameters.
