MGMN 400 cast iron parting insert – 4 mm insert for gray and ductile cast iron

Grade H5115 with a CVD Al₂O₃ coating

The MGMN 400 H5115 Horn insert is a double-ended carbide insert with a cutting edge width of 4 mm, designed for heavy-duty parting of large-diameter cast iron shafts and cutting wide external grooves in cast iron on conventional and CNC lathes. The cemented carbide grade H5115 with a multilayer aluminum oxide (Al₂O₃)-based CVD coating covers the ISO K10-K30 application range, specializing in machining gray, ductile, and malleable cast iron, with the ability to part cast steel and hardened cast iron. The widest cutting edge at 4 mm and increased body height (10 mm) provide maximum rigidity and stability for deep parting cuts on large diameters at long overhangs, allowing the highest feed rates in the entire MGMN family. The insert is compatible with MGMN-type indexable tools with a spring clamping system. Its 2-edge design allows the insert to be indexed after the first edge wears out and machining to continue without replacement.

Key features of the MGMN 400 H5115 Horn insert

  • CVD coating with a thick Al₂O₃ layer provides exceptional resistance to abrasive and crater wear, essential when machining cast iron containing abrasive silicon carbide (SiC) at high cutting speeds
  • Grade H5115 in the ISO K10-K30 range provides an optimal balance between hardness and edge toughness when machining gray, ductile, and malleable cast iron
  • Cutting width of 4 mm with T-type geometry allows heavy-duty parting of cast iron shafts up to 32 mm in diameter and cutting wide grooves for seals and sleeves, as well as lubrication grooves
  • The double-ended design provides 2 independent cutting edges, reducing the machining cost per 1 component by 50 percent
  • Compatibility with MGEHR-type holders in shank sizes 20x20-32x32 mm, BDKT parting blades, and MGIVR, BIKT, and BEKT internal holders for deep cutting
  • Dry machining capability — gray cast iron requires no coolant, and the graphite in its structure acts as a natural lubricant, preventing thermal cracking of the CVD coating

The MGMN 400 cast iron parting insert is suitable for parting heavy, large-diameter cast iron workpieces, machining hydraulic housings, heavy-duty bar parting, and cutting wide grooves. The increased cutting edge width of 4 mm provides greater rigidity when working at long overhangs. The recommended cutting speed Vc is 100-160 m/min for gray cast iron and 80-120 m/min for ductile cast iron at feed rates of 0.10-0.30 mm/rev. Dry machining is recommended for gray cast iron — cooling is unnecessary and may shorten coating life due to thermal shock; compressed air cooling is acceptable for ductile cast iron.

Frequently asked questions

The MGMN 400 insert in grade H5115 is specialized for machining cast iron in the ISO K10-K30 range: gray (GJL), ductile (GJS), and malleable cast iron. It can also part cast steel and hardened cast iron. For structural and stainless steels, a general-purpose grade such as H6310 is a better choice.

No. Dry machining is recommended for gray cast iron — the graphite in the material structure acts as a natural lubricant, while emulsion cooling can cause thermal shock and cracking of the CVD coating. For ductile cast iron, compressed air cooling is acceptable for chip removal.

With a cutting edge width of 4 mm and standard mounting in the holder, the MGMN 400 insert can part cast iron shafts up to 32 mm in diameter. For smaller diameters, choose MGMN 300 (3 mm); for diameters above 32 mm, use a BDKT parting blade with extended overhang or an MGMN 500 (5 mm) insert.
