Set Taps M3-M12 30 pcs. Varel
Net price: €68.42
Description
M3-M12 tap set with drill bits — 30 pieces
Varel M3–M12 tap set provides complete equipment for cutting internal threads in machine shops and maintenance departments. It includes hand taps in all common sizes, drill bits matched to each thread, a tap wrench, and a thread pitch gauge for pitch identification. It ensures dimensional repeatability and maintains tolerances in accordance with ISO standards.
The set includes
| ▸ | M3–M12 hand taps — 3-piece HSS sets with 6H tolerance (roughing + intermediate + finishing) |
| ▸ | NWKa metal drill bits — 7 pcs, DIN 338, for M3–M12 threads |
| ▸ | Tap wrench — No. 1.1/2, range M1–M12 |
| ▸ | Thread pitch gauge — 14-leaf, for metric and inch threads |
DIN 352 HSS hand taps
M3-M12 hand taps included in the set allow precise cutting of internal threads. Each diameter includes three taps — roughing (No. 1), intermediate (No. 2), and finishing (No. 3) — ensuring safe, progressive thread cutting.
The cutting edges, made from HSS with a hardness of 64 HRC, resist wear and are suitable for machining steel with tensile strength up to 800 MPa. Compliance with DIN 352 and a 6H tolerance ensure thread repeatability and proper fastener fit. The three-stage cutting process distributes the load evenly — minimizing the risk of tap breakage and improving surface finish. The square shank fits the No. 1.1/2 tap wrench included in the set, and the straight flutes improve chip evacuation during hand tapping.

NWKa DIN 338 metal drill bits
DIN 338 HSS metal drill bits in the set cover seven diameters: 2.5 / 3.3 / 4.2 / 5.0 / 6.8 / 8.5 / 10.2 mm. These sizes are deliberately selected — they are the exact tap drill diameters for M3, M4, M5, M6, M8, M10, and M12 threads, making the set an ideal complement to the hand taps.
High-speed steel (HSS) provides cutting edge hardness and resistance to overheating during drilling. DIN 338 specifies the geometry of standard-length twist drills — versatile tools for machining structural steel, aluminum, brass, and cast iron. The 118° point angle ensures correct centering and uniform cutting. Helical flutes evacuate chips from the hole and prevent the drill bit from jamming.
The drill bits in this set produce holes with diameters optimized for hand tapping. Correct drill bit selection determines thread quality — an undersized hole causes tap breakage, while an oversized hole results in a weak thread with reduced load capacity. The set eliminates the need to source individual sizes and ensures compatibility with the included M3-M12 taps.

14-leaf thread pitch gauge
Thread pitch gauge allows quick identification of metric thread pitch (in mm) and 55° Whitworth inch thread pitch (in TPI — threads per inch). Essential when selecting the correct tap for an existing thread or checking whether a thread has been cut correctly.

Frequently asked questions
Start by drilling a hole with the appropriate drill bit — for M8, use a 6.8 mm drill bit. The hole must be perfectly perpendicular. Fit the first tap (roughing tap No. 1) in the tap wrench and gently insert it into the hole. Turn half a turn forward, then a quarter turn back — the chips will break and will not jam the tool. Repeat the operation with tap No. 2 and No. 3. Use tapping oil throughout.
Try the gauge leaves one by one against the thread being measured — external or internal. The correct leaf will fit the profile exactly, without any clearance. The pitch value is marked on the leaf surface — in millimeters for metric threads or TPI for inch threads. The 12-leaf gauge included in the set measures pitches in the 0.5-1.75 mm range.
External thread (screw, pin): Use a caliper to measure the diameter over the thread crests — for example, a reading of 8 mm. Then select a thread pitch gauge leaf that fits the grooves and read the pitch — for example, 1.25 mm. Thread designation: M8×1.25.
Internal thread (nut, sleeve): Use the inside jaws of a caliper to measure the hole diameter. Add 1-1.5 mm to the result to obtain the nominal diameter. Determine the pitch by inserting a thread pitch gauge leaf into the hole. Example: hole diameter 6.8 mm + pitch 1.25 mm = M8×1.25 thread.
The correct drill diameter is essential for thread quality. Recommended sizes for metric threads: M3 — 2.5 mm, M4 — 3.3 mm, M5 — 4.2 mm, M6 — 5.0 mm, M8 — 6.8 mm, M10 — 8.5 mm, M12 — 10.2 mm. An undersized hole will cause the tap to break; an oversized hole will produce a low-strength thread. Consult the size table before starting work.
