Left-hand MGGN 400 L parting and grooving insert – directional 4 mm insert for steel and stainless steel

Grade H6310 with CVD coating

The left-hand MGGN 400 L JM H6310 Horn insert is a left-hand directional carbide insert with a cutting edge width of 4 mm, designed for parting off medium- and large-diameter shafts and cutting wide external grooves on conventional and CNC lathes. Unlike neutral MGMN inserts, the MGGN 400 L features left-hand directional geometry, which improves chip evacuation when feeding away from the chuck. Cemented carbide grade H6310 with a CVD coating covers the ISO P20-P40 and M10-M25 application ranges, providing versatility in machining unalloyed, alloy, and stainless steels. The compact profile dimensions (d = 1.6 mm, t = 3.5 mm) enable machining in confined spaces. The left-hand insert works exclusively with right-hand (R) indexable turning tools with a spring clamping system.

Key features of the left-hand MGGN 400 L H6310 Horn insert

  • Left-hand directional geometry (L) provides an optimal rake angle and controlled chip evacuation when feeding away from the lathe chuck
  • CVD coating resistant to temperatures of 700-1000°C maintains cutting edge stability even during intensive parting at high feed rates
  • Grade H6310 in the ISO P20-P40 and M10-M25 ranges provides an optimal balance between hardness and chipping resistance when machining steel and stainless steels
  • Cutting edge width of 4 mm with a compact profile (d = 1.6 mm, t = 3.5 mm) enables parting off medium- and large-diameter shafts and cutting grooves for retaining rings and seals, as well as lubrication grooves
  • Compatibility exclusively with right-hand (R) MGEHR holders with shank sizes from 20x20 mm to 32x32 mm and with parting blades for deep cutting
  • The increased rigidity of the 4 mm cutting edge allows higher parting feeds, reducing cycle time in series production

The left-hand MGGN 400 L parting and grooving insert is suitable for series production of medium- and large-diameter shaft components, machining hydraulic housings, cutting grooves for retaining rings, and parting off bars. Left-hand directional geometry is particularly recommended for operations requiring consistent chip evacuation in one direction. The recommended cutting speed Vc is 120-180 m/min for structural steel and 80-120 m/min for stainless steel at feeds of 0.05-0.20 mm/rev. Emulsion cooling extends cutting edge life by a factor of 2-3 compared with dry machining.

Frequently asked questions

The left-hand MGGN 400 L insert features left-hand directional geometry, meaning the cutting edge is optimized for feeding in one direction (away from the chuck). MGMN 400 is a neutral insert that works in both directions. MGGN also has a smaller profile (d = 1.6 mm, t = 3.5 mm versus d = 4.2 mm, t = 10 mm for MGMN), enabling machining in tighter spaces. The left-hand MGGN insert fits only right-hand (R) turning tools.

The left-hand MGGN 400 L insert in grade H6310 is suitable for machining structural and alloy steels in the ISO P20-P40 range and stainless and acid-resistant steels in the ISO M10-M25 range. It can also part off gray cast iron and cast steel.

The left-hand MGGN 400 L insert has left-hand directional geometry with a cutting edge shaped for use in a right-hand (R) turning tool. Installing it in a left-hand (L) tool would cause an incorrect rake angle, poor chip evacuation, and accelerated cutting edge wear. Left-hand turning tools require the MGGN 400 R insert (right-hand directional).
