Carbide insert SPNT 060304 – design and selection for drilling

square Walter insert in grade WPM for indexable drill bodies

The SPNT 060304 carbide insert is a square, positive indexable insert from the German manufacturer Walter, designed for drills with replaceable inserts. In such a drill, the steel body has two pockets: one for the center insert near the axis and another for the peripheral insert at the outer edge. The indexable drill insert serves as a replaceable cutting edge secured to the drill body with a screw. The square profile provides four cutting edges, and the corner radius rε 0.40 mm forms the transition from the hole bottom to the wall. The WPM carbide grade withstands high cutting zone temperatures, allowing the drill to operate at higher speeds and greater productivity.

Key benefits of the WPM carbide indexable insert

  • Four cutting edges — the square insert provides 4 corners; when dull, index it in the body pocket without replacing the entire drill.
  • Grade WPM for ISO groups P, M, K and N — one grade covers steel, stainless steel, cast iron, aluminum and nonferrous metals.
  • Heat resistance up to 700–1000°C — WPM carbide retains its hardness at elevated cutting speeds and high productivity.
  • Positive geometry reduces cutting forces and power consumption as the drill enters the material.
  • The 0.40 mm corner radius forms a smooth transition from the hole bottom to the wall and improves surface finish.
  • Screw clamping through the center hole allows quick insert replacement without removing the drill from the spindle.

Applications and selection of drilling parameters

The SPNT 060304 indexable insert (also written as spnt060304) is used in indexable drills for producing holes in unalloyed and alloy steel, cast iron and nonferrous metals. Calculate the spindle speed using n = 1000·Vc/(π·D), where D is the drill diameter. For a body diameter of 20 mm at a cutting speed of Vc = 60 m/min, the result is approximately 955 rpm. Cast iron and aluminum can be drilled faster than stainless steel, which dissipates heat less effectively. Read the feed from the cutting data table, keeping in mind that the two inserts are loaded differently along the drill radius.

The peripheral insert determines the hole diameter, tolerance and wall finish because it operates at full cutting speed at the drill periphery. The center insert, located near the axis of rotation, cuts at near-zero speed, so the material is deformed rather than cut there. For this reason, both positions are selected as a cooperating pair according to the specific body data sheet, but the center and peripheral inserts are purchased separately and must not be swapped. When drilling stainless steel, maintain continuous cooling and a steady feed to limit work hardening and remove heat from the cutting zone.

Application limitation

Grade WPM is not intended for hardened steels in the hardened condition (hard machining). The insert SPNT 060304 is a replaceable cutting edge for indexable drill bodies — it does not replace a solid carbide drill or an HSS drill.

Frequently asked questions about the SPNT 060304 insert

number of edges, tool selection, materials and dimensions

Four — the square shape provides 4 corners for cutting. When one edge becomes dull, index the insert in the body pocket to the next corner without replacing the entire drill. The insert is secured by a screw passing through the center hole.

Indexable drills with replaceable inserts — steel bodies with two pockets. Such a drill uses 2 inserts: a center insert near the axis and a peripheral insert at the outer edge. Both positions are selected as a cooperating pair according to the body data sheet, but the inserts are purchased separately and must not be swapped.

Grade WPM covers ISO groups P, M, K and N. Recommended cutting speeds: steel 50–75 m/min, stainless steel 35–50 m/min, cast iron 50–70 m/min, aluminum and nonferrous metals 80–100 m/min. Do not machine hardened materials.

The side length l is 6.35 mm, the insert thickness s is 3.18 mm, and the corner radius rε is 0.40 mm. This is a square, positive indexable insert from Walter in carbide grade WPM.
