IC830 cemented carbide insert – design and applications
PVD-coated 135° octagon for 45° face mills
Milling insert ONHU 050500 PL is an octagonal, double-sided indexable insert made of cemented carbide in grade IC830 from Iscar. PL is a manufacturer suffix; no specific meaning should be assigned to it without the Iscar data sheet. Shape O, an octagon with a 135° corner angle, and a zero clearance angle (letter N — negative insert) make it suitable for face mills operating at an entering angle of 45°. The PVD coating (applied by physical vapor deposition) covers machining of steel, stainless steel, cast iron, heat-resistant alloys and titanium. The screw hole provides central insert clamping, while the chip breaker guides the chip during face milling — eight corners on each of the two sides provide up to sixteen cutting edges. The inscribed circle diameter (IC) is 13 mm, and the thickness of 5.2 mm provides the rigidity required under high cutting forces.
Key benefits of the octagonal ONHU insert
- Up to sixteen cutting edges — eight corners on each of the two sides provide up to 16 usable edges.
- PVD-coated grade IC830 — covers steel, stainless steel, cast iron, heat-resistant alloys and titanium (ISO groups P, M, K, S).
- Octagonal shape for 45° face milling — the obtuse 135° corner angle strengthens the edge and allows productive passes.
- The negative design with a 0° clearance angle increases insert edge strength.
- The thickness of 5.2 mm provides the rigidity required under high cutting forces in large face mills.
- The chip breaker guides the chip when face milling large surfaces.
Octagonal insert applications and cutting data selection
The octagonal insert is suitable for face milling large surfaces on castings, housings and plates made of structural steel and cast iron. Calculate the face mill speed using n = 1000·vc/(π·D). For a face mill with a diameter of 80 mm at a cutting speed of 180 m/min, the result is approximately 716 rpm. Calculate the table feed rate as vf = fz·z·n: with six inserts in the face mill and a feed per tooth (fz) of 0.2 mm, it is approximately 859 mm/min. The double-sided design provides up to sixteen usable edges per insert.
The 135° corner angle and large inscribed circle diameter generate the high cutting forces typical of negative inserts. The insert therefore requires rigid workpiece clamping and a powerful machine tool; inadequate clamping may cause vibration. Select a depth of cut from half a millimeter to three millimeters, and apply a generous flow of emulsion when machining stainless steel and heat-resistant alloys. The absence of an additional corner radius makes the insert suitable for productive stock removal rather than precision contour finishing.
An octagon with a corner angle of 135° and a large inscribed circle diameter generates high forces — this insert is not suitable for precision contour finishing or low-powered machines with insufficient rigidity. For milling shoulders and walls at 90°, select a rectangular insert of type APKT (or the cutter body manufacturer's R390 system).

Frequently asked questions about the ONHU insert
edges, face mill selection and face milling parameters
Up to sixteen. The octagon has 8 corners on each of its two sides. When a corner becomes dull, index the insert in its pocket; after using the first side, turn it over — in total, you can use up to 16 edges.
Face mills with an entering angle of 45° and a pocket for an octagonal ONHU insert with an inscribed circle diameter of 13 mm. A central screw through the hole secures the insert. Select the specific face mill model from the cutter body manufacturer's catalog.
The PVD coating of grade IC830 covers steel (ISO P), stainless steel (ISO M), cast iron (ISO K), heat-resistant alloys and titanium (ISO S). For heat-resistant alloys, maintain a cutting speed of 20–40 m/min and a generous coolant flow.
The corner angle of 135° and the large inscribed circle diameter generate the high cutting forces typical of negative inserts. Inadequate workpiece clamping or insufficient machine rigidity causes vibration and a risk of edge chipping.
