Metal reamers - Technical Articles
Metal reamers are tools used for final or pre-final machining of a cylindrical or conical hole with the required higher accuracy class. Finishing reamers ( a.k.a. finishers ) produce holes in the class most often from IT7 to IT5.
What are reamers for metal and steel used for?
Their purpose is to correct or adjust the hole to meet higher design requirements, that is, to make a hole within a very tight dimensional tolerance or to prepare the hole after the drilling operation for finishing with a reamer.
With metal reamers, we obtain holes with very tight dimensional tolerances measured in millimeters or microns, additionally they improve the surface of the hole by reducing its roughness but also improving its geometry like its alignment. These tools are most often made of HSS, HSSE Inox cobalt high speed steel but also HSSE-PM powder cobalt high speed steel. Depending on the needs and machining capabilities of the lathe, milling machine or drilling machine, we should select reamers for metal.
HSSmetal re amers can be used in both manual and machine tooling, they have a fairly high tolerance for imperfections in the reamed hole, for this reason they can be used in any machine. An additional advantage is their price, for unit production and small series production this is a very important parameter. On the other hand, VHM carbide reamers are tools with high hardness, wear and temperature resistance, very efficient in machining, while they have a very small tolerance for misalignment of the hole, its overshoot or chuck run-out.
They can be used with very high cutting parameters such as RPM and feed. We offer adjustable manual reamers, which have a specific range of holes to be drilled and have a stepless adjustment. Thanks to the adjustment, we can ream holes in any size from metric to inch diameter. Hand reamers have blades on their circumference, manufactured from HSS steel.
A wide range of different types of metal reamers is available on the market. In order to properly systematize the tools, we can make the following divisions: by the form of the machined hole - reamers for cylindrical and conical holes; by the accuracy of machining - rippers and finishers; by the way of work - adjustable reamers, machine reamers, manual reamers; by the operation possibilities - fixed and adjustable reamers; by the attachment - shank reamers and mounted reamers. In the case of reamers for conical holes, the purpose of machining is to remove more material - to transform the cylindrical hole pre-drilled with a drill into a conical one. Typically, a set of three reamers is used - a preliminary reamer, a peeler and a finisher.
