What kind of turning knives to choose?
Depending on the type of turning and the machine park we have, we should choose knives. Folding turning knives are the most efficient solution, thanks to the use of indexable inserts the fixed cost is only the cutting inserts and the rest of the knife remains. What's more, forked inserts are usually multi-edged and have multiple cutting edges, and when 1 edge gets dull, just turn the insert and we have another new blade ready to go. A folding lathe knife is built with a shank, a socket for a multi-edge insert. Their dimensions will be determined by the 5 letter name followed by the size of the shank and the size of the cutting insert, e.g. PWLNR 25x25 08, which means that the knife is designed for WNMG 080408 insert. Characteristics and prices of other turning knives
Prices of lathe knives with brazed insert or high-speed steel are lower than folding knives in purchase and are often a better choice for conventional machines.
Solder-plate latheknives are a very good choice for unit and small batch production.
