Countersinks - For bores
Countersinks are tools designed for enlarging or otherwise shaping holes over a certain portion of their length, and for machining the surfaces around the holes, directly related to them.
Which countersinks for metal and stainless steel?
By construction, hole enlargement tools are divided into conical countersinks, folding countersinks and cylindrical-face countersinks.
For screw countersinks and conical countersinks, we use cylindrical face countersinks made of HSS or folding countersinks with replaceable carbide inserts. Cylindrical shanks are used for countersinks of smaller diameters, while Morse taper shanks are used for larger diameters. Cylindrical countersinks have a pilot, which makes the hole countersinking process more stable. Cylindrical countersinks with pilot are produced in two shank variants, which have the corresponding standard assigned. The standard according to which pilot countersinks are described is the German DIN ( Deutsche Industrie Norm ) standard. For countersinks with a smooth cylindrical shank, DIN 373 is assigned and for countersinks with a pilot, DIN 375.
Where to use a conical hole countersink?
Holecountersinks conical countersinks are used primarily for making slots for the heads of countersunk screws and for removing burrs after drilling (chamfering). We can divide them into two types: with cylindrical shank (NWSa) and with Morse taper shank (NWSb). Three varieties of conical countersinks made of high-speed steels are used, depending on the size of the tip angle 60°, 90°, 120°. They come in multi-blade varieties and as 3-blade tapered countersinks. The 3-blade countersinks have a C-shank designation and a D-shank designation on a Morse taper with a fin. The angle of countersinks is also defined by the standard, for countersinks with an angle of 60 degrees the standard is DIN 334, the angle of 90 degrees (the most popular ) DIN 335 and for the angle of 120 degrees was reserved DIN 347. These tools are produced from HSS high speed steel and from high speed steel with the addition of 5% cobalt. The addition of cobalt makes the hardness of the tool increase from 62 HRC ( in the case of HSS) to 64 HRC but also increases the machinability of the tool. It can be used for countersinking in materials such as stainless steel but also ductile iron. Tapered countersinks can also be used as side surface chamfers when chamfering or deburring side surfaces.
